Changing the spikes on your golf shoes is a smart strategy to extend their lifespan. I’ve always thrown away golf shoes with old, worn spikes, but in reality this is unnecessary and a waste of money.

A question I often find being asked is how to change spikes on golf shoes? The following images and this tutorial is done using FootJoy Traditions, but rest assured, this method applies to any golf shoes with soft spikes, and will allow you to prolong the lifespan of your shoes.

Equipment needed to replace spikes on golf shoes

The equipment necessary is partly dependent on how old your current spikes are. If your spikes are very old and worn out, then you might need either a drill, a pin, or maybe a small screw driver. (Basically just anything that can fit into a small hole to remove debris).

Regardless of the condition of your current spikes, you will definitely need a new set of soft spikes and a golf spike wrench:

I bought the wrench and spikes from amazon and they worked excellently for me, the spikes offer lots of grip on the golf course and were easy to fit. All spike removing wrenches do the same job, so I just went for the cheapest I could find and it worked perfectly. The links to the spikes and spike wrench are above.

How to Remove Spikes from Golf Shoes

Take the spike wrench from the image above and insert it into the two small holes on each spike. Occasionally, the wrench may encounter resistance due to extensive wear, causing the holes to be covered or eroded. In case you face difficulty inserting the wrench initially, consider these additional steps. Keep in mind that not all steps are necessary if you manage to get the wrench into the holes.

  • Start by cleaning the spikes with warm water.
  • Soak the bottom of the golf shoes in warm water for around 15 minutes.
  • If the wrench still doesn’t fit in the holes, try using a drill to remove the debris inside the holes. Make sure you use the drill lightly, and don’t drill into the shoe! Only the spike.

  • If you cannot see the small holes in the spikes at all, then try drilling new holes in the spikes.
  • A drill will work best, but if you don’t have access to a drill, try using a pin or small screw driver.
  • Once you can get the spike wrench in the holes, press down firmly and twist to the left to remove the spike.

Putting the new spikes on is always quicker and easier.

  1. Use the spike wrench to firmly hold down the spike into place.
  2. Twist the wrench to the right until the spike ‘clicks’ into place.

Final Tips

  • Double check how many spikes are on your golf shoes, and make sure you order either more than that amount or the same amount.
  • The older the spikes are, the harder they will be to remove, so always try to remove the spikes earlier if possible.
  • Using an electric drill is best to properly remove debris from the holes in the spikes to properly use the spike wrench
