Few golf balls that I’ve tested come close to the amount of spin the Z Star Diamond was producing from between 100 and 160 yards. The spin control around the greens, especially with chips and small pitches, is impressive too. Many other golfers who’ve used the Srixon Z Star have also praised its excellent spin control across various clubs.

Aligning with the theme of the other golf balls in the Z Star family, the soft feel of the Z Star Diamond was one of the first features I noticed. Although it’s not quite as soft as the regular Z Star, the feeling was still excellent, as it was both soft and strong off the club face. It was difficult to notice a difference in the feel between the Z Star Diamond and Z Star XV, but there are other factors that set these two golf balls apart.

Other golfers who’ve used this ball have noted its impressive durability, a feature often lacking in many premium golf balls. Srixon enhanced the Z Star Diamond’s durability with a slightly thicker cover, resulting in the golf ball picking up fewer scuff marks.

Achieving a balance between a soft, premium feel and a durable exterior is challenging, but the Z Star Diamond excels in durability compared to alternative premium options like the Titleist AVX, Callaway Chrome Soft, and even possibly the Titleist Pro V1.

During my assessment, I noticed that the high spin rates produced around the greens and with iron shots were also slightly observed with driver. While the Z Star Diamond is not excessively high spinning off the tee, there’s a bit more spin than I would personally prefer.

Generally speaking, most premium golf balls aim to be low spinning with driver because this flight encourages extra distance and straighter flights. You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘high launch, low spin’, which is what most professionals and top amateur golfers are looking for off the tee.

However, more spin isn’t always a drawback with the driver, especially for slower swing speeds. It can actually help the ball get in the air, providing extra distance for golfers who struggle with carry. Nevertheless, it was surprising to me that Brooks Koepka, with a driver swing speed of around 120-123 mph, opts for the Z Star Diamond over the Z Star XV. I suppose it all comes down to personal preference.
