In this TaylorMade TP5 review, we’ll share insights from our testing and consider feedback from golfers of different skill levels. Our aim is to offer valuable information regarding the TaylorMade TP5, helping you determine if this golf ball aligns with your playing preferences.

TaylorMade first introduced 5-piece golf balls back in 2010. The TP5 model has since been the face of 5-piece golf ball technology, and is now TaylorMade’s highest spinning tour ball. The unique 5-layer construction is said to be the key to achieving enhanced ball speed, along with excellent spin.

Our Analysis

✅ Strong, Consistent Flight

The TP5 stands out for its consistent flight throughout the golf course. During my evaluation, I observed remarkable stability in windy conditions, thanks to the strong and steady ball flight produced by the TP5. Players of varying ability have shared positive feedback regarding the flight of the ball, noting enhanced distance off the tee compared to other premium golf balls.

Personally, I noticed more distance with the TP5x compared to the TP5, likely influenced by my club speed being more suited to the TP5x, for reference, my club head speed is around 112 mph. From personal use and feedback from other golfers, I would say the following club head speed (or if you don’t know your club head speed then approximate carry distance) is best suited for both golf balls. The table below represents club speed and total carry with driver.

  TP5 TP5x
Club Head Speed Less than 108 mph Over 109 mph
Total Carry Less than 260 yard carry Over 260 yard carry

✅ Quality Soft Feel

Possibly the feature which impressed me the most with this golf ball. The feel was excellently soft with all clubs throughout the bag. The TaylorMade TP5 really does produce a quality feeling which I think is only matched with the Titleist Pro V1 in the world of golf balls. ✅ Durable and Looks Pristine

Similarly to my testing of the TaylorMade TP5x, I was very impressed with the clean look of the golf ball and the condition of the ball throughout the assessment. I was impressed with how there were virtually no scuff marks following the end of the assessment, which is often a lacking feature in premium golf balls which offer a quality soft feeling like the TP5 does.

A bit too Much Spin

The one drawback of the TP5 is that it does produce what I would consider to be a bit too much spin into the greens and off the tee. It’s very rare to consider ‘too much spin’ into the greens as a drawback to a golf ball, but the amount of spin I was seeing during the assessment, as well as what I’ve experienced in the past with this golf ball, is nothing short of surprising. Any full wedge or 9 iron onto a receptive green spins a ridiculous amount, and was frankly a bit too much for me.

Nevertheless, other golfers who have reviewed the TP5 often give very positive feedback regarding the spin the ball produces throughout the course, this is mainly because most golfers do prefer a lot of spin! Personally I just don’t, and if you are like me, then the TaylorMade TP5x could be an excellent alternative for you, offering the same positive benefits of the TP5, along with slightly less spin and a slightly firmer feel.

Summary

To sum it up, finding faults with the TaylorMade TP5 is a bit of a challenge. If you’re after a high-performing golf ball that isn’t terribly expensive, the TP5 stands out as a top choice. The only situation where it might not be the best fit is if your driver club speed exceeds around 109 mph; in that case, you might find more optimal driver distance with the TP5x.
