This TaylorMade TP5x review will provide insights from our testing process, and will consider feedback from other golfers of various abilities. Our goal is to provide valuable information regarding the TaylorMade TP5x, so that you can decide if this golf ball suits your playing style.

I’ve personally used the TaylorMade TP5 quite a lot in the past, but not so much the TP5x. I suppose the TP5 is generally considered TaylorMade’s main ‘tour performing’ golf ball, and you generally see a lot more of them on the course. However, I was very pleasantly surprised following the testing of the TP5x, because I felt as though it improved on some features that the TP5 might be lacking.

Our Analysis

✅ Excellent Flight and Distance

The TP5x is TaylorMade’s ‘fastest and longest tour ball’. Essentially it’s designed for golfers with tour standard club head speed, who are looking to maximise distance off the tee. Data from Trackman suggest that the tour average club head speed with driver is 113 mph, which translates to carrying the ball approximately 275 yards.

Personally, my club head speed averages around 110-12 mph with driver, and I was amazed at the results I was getting with the TaylorMade TP5x. Often with driver I have the issue where my ball flies sub-optimally too high, so I usually use the Titleist AVX in amateur events because this ball is designed for a lower trajectory off the tee. When I compared the TaylorMade TP5x with similar premium golf balls, the only ball that matched it’s performance off the tee seemed to be the AVX. So overall I was very impressed with the distance and flight the TP5x was showcasing during the assessment.

✅ Ideal Spin

As mentioned previously, I’ve used the TP5 a fair amount in the past, and one characteristic that always caught my attention was the spin this golf ball generates, especially with wedges or shorter irons. While many consider this a positive feature in a golf ball, I often feel as though the TP5 spins too much. It’s almost like I’m losing control because of the excessive spin which is generated when the ball hits the green. This is where the TP5x was perfect for me. The spin it produced was slightly less than the TP5, along with a slightly firmer feel. It’s worth noting that the TP5x still generates large amounts of spin, just not as excessive as the TP5.

✅ Durable and Looks Pristine

I often feel as though Titleist equipment just looks cleaner and more professional than most of TaylorMade’s stash. Surprisingly, this was not the case with the TaylorMade TP5x golf balls, as I was very impressed with the clean look of the golf ball and the condition of the ball throughout the assessment. I was impressed with how there were virtually no scuff marks following the end of the assessment, which is often a lacking feature in premium golf balls.

Not Suitable for Slower Swings

As previously mentioned, the TP5x is designed for golfers with faster swing speeds. Optimal distance and flight will likely NOT be achieved with golfers that swing the club less than 105 mph. Nevertheless, reviews from golfers with slower swing speeds have generally been surprisingly positive, so it’s likely that flight off the tee won’t be that affected if your club head speed is a bit slower. Nevertheless, if you are looking to optimise distance off the tee and your club head speed with driver is more average, say between 80 and 100 mph, then some options that could work better for you include the Callaway Supersoft or the Titleist Velocity (both will come at a much cheaper price.)

Summary

In summary, I was very impressed with this golf ball. A very under-rated premium ball, that likely doesn’t get enough use by higher level amateurs due to the popularity of the TP5 and Pro V1 models. If you have a quicker club head speed (at least 105 mph with driver, or if you don’t know your club head speed then at least 240 carry with driver), this ball could be for you. Avoid this ball if you are somebody with slower swing speed, as it won’t be optimal for you off the tee.
