Our Analysis

✅ Great Distance

Essentially, the Velocity was designed by Titleist to enhance both flight and distance off the tee. It’s particularly tailored to golfers with mid to slower swing speeds, addressing potential challenges in achieving optimum height and distance off the tee.

The suitability of this golf ball seems to extend to almost all golfers. My club head speed with driver is approximately 112 mph, which is a bit too quick for what the Velocity is designed for. However, I didn’t really find any drawbacks off the tee as I observed comparable distance with that of more premium golf balls during my assessment. 

✅ Low Spinning off the Tee

The Titleist Velocity is a low-spinning ball throughout the golf course. Its low spin is a positive feature with driver, which will generally translate to extra gains off the tee compared to golf balls of similar-quality. Despite being a more affordable option, I noticed during the assessment that the ball was producing a penetrating flight with driver, which is rare for an inexpensive golf ball. In fact, the majority of cheaper golf balls that I have tested did not display a similar flight or feeling off the tee, with the only contender being the Srixon Distance.

✅ High Ball Flight

Titleist have said that this golf ball is designed for a high launch off the tee, which I did also notice during my assessment. For golfers with slower swing speeds struggling with distance off the tee, in the majority of cases, more height will equal more distance. While getting more distance isn’t all about hitting the ball higher, this ‘high launch’ feature will be extremely valuable to many golfers who struggle with this aspect of their game. Especially during the winter months, a higher launch could prove to be a real boost for many golfers aiming to add some extra yards off the tee.

❌ Firmer Feel

As a more budget-friendly golf ball, it’s difficult to expect extra distance without a sacrifice in the feel of the golf ball around the greens and from the fairway. This was noticeable during the assessment of the Titleist Velocity, as the ball felt very firm. Personally I do prefer a softer feel (like most people), so overall, the feeling wasn’t the best for me. 

❌ Low Spinning Greenside

The ‘low spin’ is a common theme throughout the bag with this golf ball. Especially with more budget friendly golf balls, it’s difficult to find a golf ball that produces significant amounts of spin around the greens, this is especially the case with cheaper golf balls which are specifically designed to optimise distance. With the Titleist Velocity being a cheaper golf ball which is designed for enhanced distance, this drawback was certainly expected.

Summary

In summary, the Titleist Velocity is recommended for golfers aiming to boost distance off the tee, even if it means sacrificing a bit of spin around the greens. Ideal for those with average club head speeds (around 85 mph to 105 mph club speed with driver, or 170 yard to 250 yard carry).
